Did BJP links of NSS registrar PN Suresh cause his ouster?

NSS in turmoil after Shashi Tharoor's visit

There seems to be much more to the resignation of NSS registrar P N Suresh than meets the eye. The resignation of Mr. Suresh which came close on heels of the visit of Shashi Tharoor MP to NSS headquarters is reported to be the fallout of charges of corruption and nepotism raised against Mr. Suresh.  However, there are indications that the real reason for the sacking of Mr. Suresh is his new-found inclinations towards the BJP.

Media reports said Suresh was voluntold to resign by NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair after he received complaints of corruption and nepotism by the former. According to media, Mr Suresh, who was once Mr. Nari’s protege, has been projecting himself as the successor of the latter, who is nearing eighty. Mr. Suresh is said to have carried out a tour from Thrissur towards northern parts of Kerala, to rally NSS taluk unions there behind him.

A presumptuous act of Mr. Suresh at the Mannam Jayanthi meet where Shashi Tharoor was present is reported to be the last straw that broke the friendly relations between Mr. Nair and Mr. Suresh. Mr. Suresh was seen in the backdrop of a photo of the meet featuring Mr Nair and Mr. Tharoor which was allegedly supplied to the media by his minions . That enraged Mr. Nair who was goaded by a powerful coterie of NSS taluk union presidents to cut Mr. Suresh to size.

BJP connection

However, there are reports that Mr. Suresh had held some secret parleys with a BJP minister with Kerala links bypassing Mr. Nair. Mr.Suresh who is known for his lobbying skills is said to have reached an understanding with the BJP. That really enraged the NSS general secretary who sensed a conspiracy against him, and eventually forced him to submit his “Voluntary” resignation. But, the supporters of Mr. Suresh claim that he has already resigned and has some offers from the union government.  Mr. Suresh was the director of Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam at Aranmula and was the vice chancellor of Kerala Kala Mandalam during Congress rule. Nair’s supporters say Mr. Suresh had used his NSS links to win positions and subdue those who questioned his wrong doings.

Meanwhile, in an interview to The New Indian Express, Mr. Nair unabashedly conceded his preference for the Congress and dislike for the BJP, which hints at his displeasure at some undisclosed acts of the BJP. Mr. Nair bats for Mr. Tharoor in the  interview saying he is worthy to become the chief minister of Kerala or even the Prime Minister of India. It also contains a controversial remark that there is no Love Jihad in Kerala and it is wrong to single out Muslims for criticism. This is bound to cause strong rebuttals from aggrieved parties.

Shashi Tharoor at Mannam Jayanthi of NSS: Answering the WHYs and WHATs

A. Harikumar

Many raised eyebrows when Nair Service Society (NSS) leader G. Sukumaran Nair invited Congress leader Shashi Tharoor MP to inaugurate Mannam Jayanthi meet, a few months ago. But, more surprises were in store for them. On January 2, at the meeting, Mr. Nair shocked them when he recanted his previous words that Tharoor is "a Delhi Nair". Mr. Sukumaran Nair, known for his no nonsense approach had never swallowed his words, since before becoming the NSS general secretary.

Mr. Nair didn't stop there. The all powerful NSS general secretary, who once publicly censured even the top leaders of the Congress in Kerala including the former chief minister Oommen Chandy and the leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala went on to shower praises on Tharoor. “Tharoor is the son of Kerala and a Global citizen. There is no leader worthier than him  to inaugurate this august function,” Mr. Nair said. A host of Congress leaders who listened to the speech, including Mr. Chennithala, didn’t respond. Perhaps, they were petrified at their fall from the grace and the newfound acceptance for Mr. Tharoor at Perunna.

Standing tall at the NSS meet, Tharoor seemed to enjoy the fortuitous turn of events. But despite being gracious, Tharoor didn’t forget to make innuendos at his rivals in the party. Quoting NSS founder Mannath Padmanabhan Tharoor said, “Nairs don’t tolerate each other,” which could be interpreted as his response to the jibes against him by his colleagues Ramesh Chennithala, KC Venugopal and V D Satheeshan together.

Marriage of convenience

What could be the possible factors that induced Mr. Nair, to go out of his way to bring a global citizen Tharoor to NSS headquarters at Perunna, when Tharoor is not known to be willing to play second fiddle to anyone? It is highly unlikely that Mr. Tharoor will transform to an acolyte of Mr Nair, or the latter known for his supercilious attitude towards politicians who seek his favours, change his outlook. However, a marriage of convenience suits both of them at the moment, though there is not much love lost between them.

With the CPM led LDF coming to power for a second time the NSS leadership has lost its clout completely in the state administration for the time. Almost a year ago Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, kept Mr. Nair waiting for hours when the latter went to meet him at Kottayam, a snubbing Mr Nair is unlikely to forget.  NSS wants Pinarayi out, but has realised that the present leadership of Congress in Kerala doesn’t have the balls to stand up to Pinarayi. Besides, he has an axe to grind with Kerala Opposition leader V D Satheeshan who protested against caste leaders trying to browbeat the Congress.

Ramesh Chennithala, once the blue eyed boy of Mr Nair is no more the apple of his eye. K.C Venugopal who has his well-wishers in the NSS leadership is not much loved by Mr. Nair, for reasons best known to him. All the aforesaid Nair leaders are rivals of Tharoor in Congress. So, it makes sense for Nair and Tharoor to ally. This is no secret. Even political novices can conclude this. But is there something more?

Why is Nair adamantly rejecting BJP’s overtures despite the Union Government continuously sending positive signals like rewarding people like P. S Sreedharan Pillai and CV Ananda Bose with governor posts? Does Tharoor really think that a public assertion of Nair identity and overt support of Mr. Nair could ensure his becoming Kerala CM?

On the face of his decisions and actions till now, it is explicit that Mr. Nair is uneasy in the company of the BJP, and at his age habits are hard to change. But he is in no way anti-Hindu which was evident when NSS donated for the Ram Temple construction, and supported it publicly. However, the eco system in which Mr. Nair thrives is pro Congress. He never moves out of this eco system and doesn’t even travel outside Changanassery. He never misses the NSS office. In the NSS hierarchy, there is little decentralisation of power and the approach is top down. So Mr. Nair embodies the NSS.

NSS leadership  is unlikely to be comfortable interacting with a disciplined cadre organisation like the RSS, which they fear would swallow them ultimately. Then what about the BJP? The Kerala BJP leadership lacks influential leaders with thel stature and conviction to win over Mr. Nair. The central leadership hasn’t sent any top national leaders as emissary who can win the trust of Mr. Nair. To sum up, both are to be blamed for the mistrust. The result is Mr. Nair prefers interacting with Congress leaders known to him for decades. But however hard Mr. Nair might try, Mr. Nair won’t be able to dislodge Mr. Pinarayi.  Though the political optics of Kerala at present seems to be against Pinarayi, assembly polls to be held in 2026 is a long way off.

Will Tharoor’s strategy pay off?

After getting an effusive welcome at Muslim League supremo Panakkad Thangal’s home , the NSS headquarters and an invitation from Maramon convention in hand Tharoor is in a full swing now. But the future is unlikely to be unicorns and rainbows. In all likelihood Mr. Tharoor will have a rollercoaster ride, full of ups and downs. The evolving social and economic realities in Kerala will make it impossible to jerry-rig a coalition involving the NSS, the Muslim League and Christian Churches.

The  demographic changes in Kerala have already made Muslims the single largest community which constitute 28 percent of the state’s population. Muslims are now the richest community in Kerala which accounts for more than 55 percent of the remittance. It’s natural for the economically and demographically most powerful group to demand leadership, and they will certainly do it. NSS and Churches won’t accept it. So the present camaraderie isn't a throwback to the days of Vimochana Samaram of 1959-60 when all the three united to fight communists and dislodged the EMS ministry. That won’t repeat.

The Muslim league has been incrementally upping the pressure on the Congress within the UDF since the 2001 Antony government. By the time of Oommen Chandy government, they have gained five ministers in the ministry, something unthinkable once. The number of Congress MLAs and Muslim League MLAs in assembly is now almost the same. Muslim League is now no more averse to CPM. Communism is dead, and the present left is actually the Islamo-Left, which depends on radical islamist groups for their survival.

The newfound love of the Muslim League for Mr. Tharoor is their fear of Hindutva. With the fear of BJP looming over their head, the Muslim League will try to woo anyone, who they think can stem a possible Hindutva tide. So it’s not love for Tharoor that made the Muslim League extend a hand of friendship, it’s their own political exigencies,, despite Tharoor publicly asserting his upper caste credentials.

If the Congress fails again in the 2025 Lok sabha polls, and BJP returns to power, the power hungry Congress leaders in Kerala would get paranoid and resort to all types of brinkmanship. Since the algorithm of Kerala politics is bound to change in such a situation, it’s better not to read too much into the present developments. The significance of present developments is they will help Tharoor build his brand and extend its footprint. He can decide on the party that could help him fufil his ambitions in future. He is likely to wait and watch till then. If the rickety Indira Bhavan (Congress headquarters) collapses, Tharoor has other options. Perhaps, he is preparing the ground.

Mannam as an egalitarian and universal citizen

Mannath Padmanabhan, the founder of Nair Service Society was not just a caste leader as his name itself indicates. At an age when Nairs used surnames, Mannath Padmanabhan Pillai removed the surname from his name and became a total Hindu, thereby underscoring the idea of casteless Hindu society and the ultimate goal of universal brotherhood. As charity begins from home, Mannam began his work among his own community members; Nairs. But, he was never parochial or casteist. It would be appropriate to remember two incidents which testify his stature as a Sanatan Hindu on the occasion of birth anniversary of Mannath Padmanabhan which falls on Janurary 2.

Once while Mannam was staying at Pandalam, a youth came to see him. The youth was led to Mannath Appoppn (Grandpa Mannam) as he was fondly addressed. After exchanging pleasantries, Mannam asked the youth about his family. The youth said he belonged to Ezhava community and came from a poor background. Mannam then asked about the purpose of his visit. The youth, who was a Congress leader, said he wanted an admission to pre-university at Pandalam NSS College, but didn’t have enough marks to get admission on merit. He requested Mannam to give an admission in his personal quota. Mannam, though for a while, called an attendant and asked him to ensure that the youth got admission .

Some local NSS leaders were annoyed at the act of Mannam giving admission to a youth of another caste in Nair community quota. Mannam told them his logic. He said, that the youth was honest brave and has leadership qualities. He told me the truth and made a request. What is wrong in that? asked Mannam. He continued, “I am sure, he will go places in his political life. If we deny him a seat, he will approach some Christian management and they will readily grant him his wish. So isn't it better that we help him. He will be indebted to us, and in future he would remember us.”

Later, things turned out to be in the way Mannam predicted. The youth went on to become the finance minister off Kerala and was a powerful leader during his times. Whenever, he won he used to visit Mannam Samadhi and pay floral tributes.

One of my teachers, who is also from Ezhava community once told me about a gesture of Mannam which touched him greatly. My teacher was from a rich aristocratic Ezhava family from central Travancore. While he was studying for BSc in S.B College, Changanassery he went to see Mannam.

It was out of sheer curiosity that I went to see him. I was a communist and never had any love lost for Mannam, who was against Communists then. There were many who were waiting to see Mannam, when I reached the house in Changanassery where he was staying. When my turn came, I was led to Mannam. He looked at me probingly and asked about my family. When I told him my family details, his face lighted up and there was a special warmth. He embraced me and told me that my maternal uncle was his great friend. Then, he enquired about my studies.

I told him that I was studying at S.B College. Suddenly, he was angry. Why did you join SB college when our college (NSS Hindu College, Changanassery) was here? Why didn’t you approach me? Then he calmed down, and asked me to complete the degree and join NSS college for the post graduation. I was overwhelmed at his love. Then I realised why Mannam was called Grandpa by everyone, said my teacher.

Nair priests to replace Brahmin priests at temples of Nair Service Society

One of the most interesting announcements made by Nair Service Society General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair at the 136th Mannam Jayanthi celebration concluded at NSS headquarters Changanasseri on Jan 3, 2013 was decision of the organization to promote Nairs as priests instead of Brahmin Priests at temples owned by NSS.
Addressing a mamoth gathering of Nairs at Nair Delegates’ Meet on the first day of the two-day celebration, Sukumaran Nair emphasised the need to promote learned Nairs as priests
The aim is to identify members of the community who possess ‘brahmanyam, Nair said and pointed out that exploitation exists in spiritual arena even now.
Leading English newspapers which quoted Nair said Nair pointed out that Sections of Brahmins who used to take advantage of the Nair community at various power centres are continuing the practice in spiritual arena and to stop this, those Nairs with tantric knowledge have to be made priests. NSS will start more Tantrik vidyapeets he asserted.
When the NSS started its first Thanthra Vidya Peethom, there was opposition from certain sections. However challenges were overcome and the first batch of candidates have passed out and are receiving wholehearted acceptance from Nair community, Sukumaran Nair said. However Nair clarified that his criticism is not against all Brahmins but only against those who claim to be Brahmin and lack knowledge of Vedas and other Hindu scriptures and pooja practices.
Sukumaran Nair’s announcement is timely and it is high time that Nairs appointed learned Hindus as priests in temples owned by them rather than looking for those who bear  Brahmin caste names. As Rigveda said “Janmana Jayathe Sudra, Karmanya Diwija Uchyathe,’. This can be roughly translated as everyone is born Sudra but attains Brahminhood by studies and culture.
One cannot forget the acts of former Sabarimala Tantri Kantaru Mohanaru who was banned from performing duties at Sabarimala following findings of Travancore Devaswom Board that he engaged in acts not expected from him. Once a learned three member inquiry commission which investigated into irregularities in Devaswom Board interviewed Mohanaru. Many newspapers had reported the answers given byMohanaru to commission. Mohanaru admitted before the commission that  he does not know Sanskrit, Veda mantras. He was unable   to tell the commission the birth star of Lord Ganapathi or recite  Bhagyasooktham even though he claimed he conducted Ganapathi Homam.  When this was the plight of a Sabarimala Tantri who claimed traditional right to the post, it is better Learned Nairs conducted pooja themselves.

Kerala’s communal harmony lost its warmth: AK Antony at Mannam Jayanthi

Inauguration of Mannam Jayanthi celebrations 2013 of Nair Service Society became an occasion to analyze social conditions in Kerala famed for social justice and communal harmony. Indian Defence Minister A.K Antony who inaugurated the celebrations at Nair Service Society headquarters on Jan 2, 2013 said some soul stirring truths.

Antony said those who occupy top positions should ensure that social justice and communal balance should be maintained. Antony added that this was essential to maintain communal harmony in Kerala. The audience including a large number of Nairs and other community members welcomed Antony’s words with thunderous claps.

Antony’s words assume significance in the context of opinions expressed by Nair Service Society and SNDP earlier that some of the decisions of Kerala government had adversely affected social justice and communal balance in Kerala. Nair Service Society general secretary Sukumaran Nair had earlier pointed out that appointing a fifth minister from Muslim League will have negative impact on social and communal balance in Kerala. But UDF leaders succumbed to Muslim League’s pressure.

At the Nair meet, Antony also pointed out that that Kerala’s communal harmony has lost its warmth and conflicts between different communities in Kerala have increased. He pointed out that communal harmony in Kerala will be ensured only when social justice and communal balance is maintained.

Of late Nair and other Hindu community leaders have been complaining that minority communities in Kerala are cornering a major chunk of benefits of welfare steps being taken by Kerala and union governments. Nair and Ezhava leaders have often pointed out that majority Hindus are now being treated as second class citizen in Kerala. Current Nair-Ezhava unity in Kerala is the result of this feeling that Nairs, Ezhavas and other Hindus in Kerala are being neglected.

A.K Antony’s brave words on communal situation in Kerala are likely to result in hot debate on Kerala’s politics and social conditions. Antony had always tried to tell the truth unlike some other leaders who tried to suppress the truth to protect their personal interests. Antony had earlier been forced to resign as chief minister following his speech at a Namboothiri Yoga Kshema Sabha meet on the plight of majority community in Kerala.

At Mannam jayanthi Antony warned that Kerala will become a mental home if the current situation in the state continued. Anonty’s words should be an eye opener to those who rule Kerala.

Mannam jayanthi celebrations 2013 of NSS reiterates Nair-Ezhava unity

Mannam Jayanthi celebrations 2013 progressing at NSS headquarters Changanasseri have become an occasion to reiterate Nair-Ezhava Unity. Nair Service Society general secretary G Sukumaran Nair who inaugurated all Kerala Nair delegates’ meet on the new year day of 2013 said Nair-Ezhava unity would be preserved at all costs.

It seems finally NSS-SNDP unity is showing signs of lasting long. Previous unity moves had been abandoned following reasons ranging from ego of leaders to manipulations by leaders of minority communities and political parties in Kerala. Sukumaran Nair said Nair-Ezhava unity would eventually grow to include all sections of Hindus in Kerala.
Sukumaran Nair said politicians are trying to divide castes in Kerala. He said Nairs should realize this.

It is really welcome that NSS leadership has realized the threats being faced by Hindus in Kerala. Though Hindus are still majority in Kerala, the ruling coalition United Democratic Front lead by Congress has a majority MLAs from minority communities in Kerala. Similarly, recently the Congress unit in Kerala reconstituted office bearers and a majority of DCC presidents now belong to minority communities. Congress had earlier tried to ensure social equilibrium while reconstituting committees. But this time it seems Hindus got a raw deal while district committee of Congress was reconstituted. Congress leadership should realize that there is a real threat of party losing its hold among Hindus, especially Nairs.

Nairs along with Christians used to be the major vote bank of Congress in Kerala. At this rate Nairs may join BJP and some may vote for CPI (M), if Congress fails to correct imbalance.
